Heritage… A Vision In Search of Followers
To understand what a Follower is one must define a Leader. A Leader is “A person who has followers in a given situation.” I think, in some way we are all leaders and in some way we are all followers—sounds confusing doesn’t it? Yet, I am convinced that we spend too much time speaking and writing about Leaders. But what most of us need is more training in how to Follow.
So here goes…..What is a Follower? I believe it is a person who has recognized a Leader in a specific situation and has chosen to get along side or behind and Follow that Leader in specific situations. The disciples followed Jesus.
I was surprised to learn that most of the biblical qualities that identified a Leader were the same qualities of all Christians—all Followers of Christ! Or the very qualities that the Bible defines for good Leaders apply almost equally to good Followers.
The world has learned this lesson better than the Church. As Christians, we must learn to serve our God as well as Followers and Leaders.
I think that the majority of us (Christians) are going to spend more time Following than Leading. Therefore over the coming weeks I will write, what I believe to be some qualities of Followship.
